KL Rahul flops with the bat, but takes a leadership role
Opening batsman KL Rahul failed with the bat in the first innings of the Oval Test, and he was only able to score 14 runs off 40 balls, with one four.
Rahul was dismissed by the English pace-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes on the first ball of the 16th over, as he misjudged a short of a length and inside-edged it into his stumps.
However, during India’s first innings with the ball on Day 2, Rahul fulfilled the responsibility of a senior-most player and was seen guiding his teammates as well as captain Shubman.
He was also seen stopping the escalation of an exchange between Ben Duckett and Akash Deep. England openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley built a remarkable 92-run stand in 78 balls and played an ultra-aggressive brand of cricket.
Ben Duckett, who has got a great record at The Oval, was seen telling Akash Deep, “You can’t get me out in here,” and dispatched the Indian bowler all over the park.
However, he eventually fell to Akash Deep on the fifth ball of the 13th over while going for a reverse scoop and was caught by the Indian wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel.
Akash Deep celebrated aggressively after picking a wicket and put his arm around Ben Duckett’s shoulder while saying something in a savage send-off. Although it looked like a light-hearted exchange, KL Rahul made sure things didn’t escalate and tapped Akash Deep on the shoulder before pulling him back.

Meanwhile, in the second major incident, KL Rahul was seen fighting with the on-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena after the spat between Prasidh Krishna and Joe Root.
On the 5th ball of the 22nd over, Prasidh Krishna bowled a sensational good length delivery just outside off-stump to Joe Root that beat the outside edge of the bat and went towards the keeper.
Krishna was seen passing on some words to Root in his follow-through, and the England batter also replied fiercely. Then, on the sixth and final ball of the over, Joe Root hit Prasidh Krishna for a four, and the duo again engaged in a heated verbal fight.
After the incident, umpire Kumar Dharmasena was seen slamming only Prasidh Krishna and not Joe Root. That was when Rahul lost his cool and engaged in a heated chat with Dharmasena, who threatened the Indian batter and asked him to have a discussion after the game.
Here’s how the conversation unfolded between KL Rahul and Kumar Dharmasena:
Rahul: What do you want us to do? Be quiet?
Kumar Dharmasena: You will like any bowler come and talk to you? No, you can’t do that. No Rahul, we should not go on that way.
Rahul: What do you want us to do? Just bat and ball and go home?
Kumar Dharmasena: We will discuss this at the end of the match. You can’t talk like that.
