Virat Kohli ODI retirement speculation takes fresh turn after ex-India head coach’s remarks

Virat Kohli ODI

WV Raman has targeted Virat Kohli’s “detractors” as the former India captain continues to dominate the ODI format. After his match-winning knock of 93 runs in the three-match ODI series opener against New Zealand, Raman made a stunning statement on Virat Kohli’s future.

WV Raman sends a clear message to Virat Kohli’s critics

Despite retiring from Test and T20I cricket, the former Indian women’s head coach has stressed that Kohli remains one of the most driven and self-aware cricketers of his generation. And Raman believes that the Indian batting icon will keep playing as long as he enjoys the game and feels he can live up to the standards and legacy he has built over the years.

Kohli backed that belief with yet another powerful performance against New Zealand, extending his golden run in international cricket. He registered his fifth consecutive 50+ score in ODIs. He missed out on a century, but his knock of 93 helped India take a 1-0 lead in the home series.

Kohli’s stunning form shuts down retirement noise

With India chasing a challenging target of 301, Kohli played the anchor role to perfection. He scored 93 runs from 91 balls, hitting eight fours and a six, and made sure India stayed in control throughout the chase. Now, he would like to extend his sublime form in Rajkot, where the second ODI is scheduled to be played on January 14 against the Black Caps.

His form has been consistent and dominant in ODIs, with no sign of fatigue or decline in hunger. Having been impressed by his domination since retirement from the Test and T20I formats, Raman pointed out how Kohli continues to silence critics with every inning.

Kohli still hungry and in control: WV Raman explains why the end is not near

The cricket pundit believes that Kohli understands exactly what it takes to succeed at the highest level and will step away from the game only when he feels the time is right.

WV Raman said on his YouTube channel, “Such cricketers generally take calls based on how they feel when they get up one fine morning. Virat Kohli, in that respect, will be no exception. He will continue until he’s enjoying the game and churning out runs. And until he can do justice to his reputation and his legacy that he has built up over the years.”

He added, “Once again, he is quite obviously making it clear to his detractors that he’s going to be around for a while and he’s going to leave the stage only when he deems fit. And quite rightly so because he’s aware of what it takes to be on top of the game at the international level.”

Kohli’s special milestone

Kohli achieved a big milestone during his Vadodara knock against New Zealand. During his innings, the dashing right-hander crossed the landmark of 28,000 international runs and became only the third player in history to do so. He is now only behind Sachin Tendulkar in the list.

So far, Kohli has played 557 international matches and scored 28,068 runs at an impressive average of 52.66. He also has 84 centuries and 146 half-centuries to his name across the format.
