South Africa will lock horns with New Zealand for the first semifinal of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 on March 4. The SA vs NZ Match will be held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the venue where India took on West Indies in the Super 8 match.
During the pre-match press conference, South Africa skipper Aiden Markram informed that they closely observed the India-match to gather some information about the pitch. He looked pretty confident after monitoring the surface and informed that they will decide the playing XI tonight, the night before the match.

“Watched the India vs West Indies match closely. Just saw the pitch and it looked pretty good. Looked like darker soil. We will decide about the XI tonight,” Aiden Markram said ahead of the first semifinal between South Africa and New Zealand.

The experienced batter also said that the result of a match is decided by the performances on the ground. As the captain of the team, he is well aware about the fact that if they can perform according to their plans and potential, they will be able to make a difference against their opposition, New Zealand.
“As a captain, you want to get the team over the line, don’t just focus on just watching the ball and playing… make a proper effort to separate the two, and if you make proper effort, you end up contributing to a winning cause”, the captain further stated in the press conference in Kolkata.
Aiden Markram on the ‘favorites’ tag
On pen and paper, South Africa is looking stronger than New Zealand. Ahead of the semi-final, multiple critics and fans believe that the Proteas are the favorite to take the crucial match away from the Blackcaps. Though Aiden Markram did not consider them as the favorite. They are on a mission to pull out their best brand of cricket in the match.
“It’s people’s opinion. We are just trying to focus on the game, playing an exciting brand of cricket that we have been doing for the last 18 months or so.” Markram replied to being the favourite.
Markram knows how to put the Kiwis on the floor
The Proteas, who have been performing like an undisputed force in the ongoing title race, have a clear vision of how to overcome all the tough challenges. It’s all about the reading conditions and executions according to match conditions, under pressure, the leader of South Africa was clearly briefed.
“It’s more about making good decisions under pressure, reading the conditions well. It makes a massive difference and it’s about ultimately executing well. There is a clear direction in which we are trying to move in the day”, Aiden Markram told the media ahead of the 1st semi-final of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
