After Australia’s commanding 4-1 Ashes 2025-26 series victory over England, Steve Smith has openly discussed his retirement plans, but he has kept his cards close to his chest over his future in the Baggy Green from now on.
Steve Smith Drops Retirement Bombshell After Ashes Triumph, Eyes 2027 Redemption
Australia wrapped up the Ashes 2025-26 in commanding fashion, sealing the five-match Test series 4-1 with a five-wicket victory over England in the final game in Sydney. While the celebrations were loud, attention quickly turned to what lies ahead for the aging players, including Smith himself.
After the Ashes triumph, the stand-in captain openly reflected on age, the future, and whether he would still be around for the next big challenge. Smith made it clear that the group still has big goals. The biggest of them is winning an Ashes series in England in 2027.

However, the veteran batter has admitted there is uncertainty around his own future, as he will be 38 years old when the next Ashes series begins in England in 2027, making his involvement far from guaranteed by then. So, he refused to commit to anything at the moment.
The Aging Warriors Who Defied Doubters
Australia fielded one of the oldest Test teams ever seen. In both the Perth and Sydney Tests, 10 players in the XI were over the age of 30. Only seven teams in the entire history of Test cricket have done this, and Australia did it twice in this single series. The other five all belonged to England sides from the early 1900s, between 1909 and 1926.
Before the Ashes series began, questions were raised about whether Australia’s aging squad could keep up with a younger England side. Those doubts were completely silenced on the field as the veterans silenced all critics with dominant performances.
Mitchell Starc (35): Won the Player of the Series award for his lethal bowling in all 5 Tests, taking 31 wickets.
Scott Boland (36): Played every Test, taking 20 wickets at 24.95.
Michael Neser (35): Took 15 wickets in just three Tests at a stunning average of 19.93.
Alex Carey (34): Played a key role both as wicketkeeper and batter, scoring 323 runs.
Travis Head (32): Finished as the leading run scorer with 629 runs
Steve Smith: Led Australia to victory from the front with 286 runs in 4 tests.
Australia’s aging stars keen on winning Ashes 2027 in England: Steve Smith
After Australia’s aging stars proved everyone wrong, Steve Smith said that they are all keen to win the Ashes in England in 2027. Speaking at the post-match press conference at the SCG on January 8, Steve Smith clarified his immediate stance but acknowledged the clock is ticking.

The seasoned batter was quoted as saying by Fox Cricket, “I’m sure everyone’s excited to go there and try and win the Ashes. The squad we’ve had over the last four or five years has been amazing. So hopefully we can keep growing, getting better.”
The Unfinished Business Driving Steve Smith
The motivation for Steve Smith is clear: he has played four Ashes series (2013, 2015, 2019, and 2023) in England so far, but has never won this prestigious series there. The 2019 Ashes in England was his best, amassing 774 runs at an average of more than 110, which is very rare in Test cricket.
However, the right-handed batter’s Ashes journey in England actually started much earlier. He played during the 2010 Ashes but mainly as a leg-spinner. Now, he is hoping to maintain his fitness and form to be able to make that Australia squad that tours England for the Ashes in 2027.
Smith signed off by saying, “It’s something that I certainly haven’t done in my career, and something I’d like to tick off; whether I get there or not is a different question.”
