Shreyas Iyer‘s poor form continues in the ongoing DY Patil T20 Cup 2026 tournament. The star middle-order batter failed again during the BPCL vs Reliance match in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday, February 25. With a flop show from Iyer, BPCL lost the match by 65 runs.
Ahead of the IPL 2026 season, Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) has been struggling with his form. In the previous match of the tournament, he was dismissed for a golden duck against Bank of Baroda. , In the following game, the batter went to score only 5 off 13.
Shreyas Iyer departed at a crucial moment of the run chase
In the second innings, BPCL needed to chase a massive target of 200, and for that stiff task, they needed the support of their experienced batter. Because of his stature, Iyer had a lot of expectations on his shoulders. Proving most of his fans wrong, he dismissed even before confirming a double-digit run.
The off-form of the skipper will definitely cause some headaches for the IPL franchise. The right-handed batter has only a few games in hand, before getting himself out of the tournament. As per reports, the local T20 tournament will continue till March 6. With less than two weeks in hand, the Mumbai-born will have to improve his form before joining the Punjab Kings camp ahead of the IPL 2026 season.

Iyer was with Team India ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026
Before the T20 World Cup 2026, when Team India was suffering from multiple injury blows, Shreyas Iyer replaced Tilak Varma, who had to undergo surgery. The 31-year-old was named for the 5-match T20I bilateral series against New Zealand, but did not get any chance to play for the Men in Blue.
There were rumours, that Iyer could join the T20 World Cup 2026 squad as well to replace the injured Tilak Varma. Though, Varma got his match fitness within the stipulated timeframe.
Iyer remained on the bench during the India vs New Zealand T20I series, even after the niggle of the top-order batter Ishan Kishan. Former India cricketer, now a cricket expert, Aakash Chopra slammed the Indian team management for not providing Iyer any chance to showcase his talent against the Kiwis.
Aakash Chopra slammed Indian team management for not providing Iyer a chance in the playing XI vs New Zealand
“My biggest point is, why have you kept Shreyas Iyer in the team? When Tilak Varma got injured, I was the one who said Shreyas shouldn’t be played because his name is not in the World Cup squad. However, when Ishan Kishan got injured, you had no other batter sitting outside”, Chorpa said on his YouTube channel.
Iyer’s next major assignment will be during the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League, where he will again feature for Punjab Kings as their leader. Under his captaincy, PBKS reached the final of IPL 2025, only to be defeated by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
