A jaw-dropping batting show in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 has sparked both admiration and debate, with Ravichandran Ashwin weighing in after Vaibhav Suryavashi’s record-smashing knock grabbed the attention of the entire cricket world.
India’s young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi lit up the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 by hammering a breathtaking century in just 36 balls for Bihar against Arunachal Pradesh on December 24. It was one of the most blistering innings seen in List-A cricket.

Suryavanshi unleashed absolute mayhem at the crease, racing to 190 runs from only 84 deliveries. His innings was packed with clean hitting, leaving bowlers with no answers and spectators in disbelief. The left-handed batter created history at a very young age by scoring his maiden List-A hundred when he was just 14 years and 272 days old.

This made Suryavanshi the youngest player ever to score a century in List-A cricket, breaking a long-standing previous record held by Pakistan’s Zahoor Elahi, who was 15 years and 209 days when he reached the milestone in 1986.
Not just that, the Bihar opener reached 150 runs in just 59 balls, which is now the fastest 150 ever recorded in List-A cricket. In doing so, the India U19 batting sensation surpassed the record set by the South African legend AB de Villiers during the 2015 ODI World Cup.
Here’s how Suryavanshi unleashed a record-shattering blitz:
Runs: 190
Balls Faced: 84
Strike Rate: 226.19
Boundaries: 16
Sixes: 15
He reached his hundred in a mere 36 balls, making it one of the fastest in the Vijay Hazare Trophy history, and powered Bihar to a colossal total of 574/6. Chasing the impossible target, Arunachal Pradesh folded for 177, handing Bihar the second-highest in all List-A cricket with 397 runs.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s Reaction: Praise for Talent, Concern for Structure
The former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin hailed Vaibhav Suryavanshi for his pure masterclass, but he highlighted how the uneven matches can affect the spirit of the contest. He stressed that players like Vaibhav can only play what is in front of them and deserve full credit for doing their job brilliantly, but the heavy defeats could hurt the confidence of teams like Arunachal Pradesh.
Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel, “Huge applause for Vaibhav Suryavanshi. But I again want to ask a question. There is a huge divide, chalk and cheese, in terms of quality with some teams. It becomes very lopsided with some teams, and there is no contest at all.
It is not an ideal contest. Credit to Vaibhav for his performance. He is doing what he has to do. But if we are serious about teams like Arunachal Pradesh becoming good sides, what will this do to their confidence?”
Shashi Tharoor and Shikhar Dhawan’s huge praise for Vaibhav Suryavanshi
Earlier, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan hailed Vaibhav for his stunning innings in the ongoing VHT tournament on Wednesday. Tharoor even tagged BCCI, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and head coach Gautam Gambhir in his post for Vaibhav.
The last time a fourteen year old showed such prodigious cricketing talent, it was Sachin Tendulkar — and we all know what became of him. What are waiting for? VaibhavSuryavanshi for India!@imAagarkar @GautamGambhir @bcci @sachin_rt https://t.co/BK9iKqBGV2
