MCA to honour Ravi Shastri: Mumbai has been the hub of producing some of the greatest cricketers for Indian cricket, who have gone on to play and captain for India for longer and shorter periods. From the likes of Ajit Wadekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar, and Rohit Sharma, and the list goes on.
Over the years, these cricketers have made a name for themselves in Indian cricket and in world cricket as well. Last year, in May 2025, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) celebrated India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma, former India captain Ajit Wadekar, and former BCCI president Sharad Pawar.
Ravi Shastri to be honoured with a stand
All the above-mentioned three legends of Mumbai cricket got stands named after them at the city’s historic Wankhede Stadium. The stadium also has stands dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Dilip Vengsarkar. Last year, there were talks by the MCA to pay tribute to another former Indian cricketer and head coach, Ravi Shastri.

However, exactly a year later, there have been new reports arising from the Indian Express, that MCA is set to name a stand on Shastri. His significant role in shaping modern Indian cricket as a coach- Shishir Hattangadi
Last year, former Mumbai captain Shishir Hattangadi wrote a letter to the MCA, urging them to to honor Shastri. In the letter the former wrote, “I must express my surprise and concern at the omission of Ravi Shastri, former India captain, all-rounder, and national coach, from the list of names commemorated at the stadium.”
“His legacy is well known-not just the iconic feat of hitting six sixes in an over in a first-class game, following in the footsteps of Sir Gary Sobers-but also for his impactful career as a player and his significant role in shaping modern Indian cricket as a coach.”
Ravi Shastri changed the dynamics of Indian cricket
Shastri was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, and he captained India for a short period as well. However, under his coaching, the India National Cricket Team played an amazing and fearless brand of cricket. Ravi Shastri was the first coach to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia in two back-to-back series in 2018/19, followed by the 2020-21 series.
Shastri and Virat Kohli experienced significant success in Test cricket, as under him India won 25 Tests in 43. This was a brilliant patch for the Men in Blue side under him. Under him, India never lost a Test series in India. Later, Shastri was replaced by Rahul Dravid in 2022.
Now that there are discussions of a stand named for him, it would be a huge honour for the former India head coach. Shastri has now been associated with commentary, and he has been on the panel of commentators for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
