The West Indies National Cricket Team might have faced heartbreak during their Super 8 clash with India at the T20 World Cup 2026, but their hard-hitting batter Rovman Powell scripted history on Sunday, March 1, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Powell smashed 34 not out from just 19 balls against India in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match. However, the Windies suffered a heartbreaking five-wicket loss to India in the last Super 8; as a result, the two-time champions crashed out of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.
Rovman Powell becomes the first West Indies player to hit 150 T20I sixes
Rovman Powell hit three fours and two massive sixes and made those crucial runs at an excellent strike rate close to 179. Those two sixes helped him reach 150 sixes in T20I cricket. With this, Powell became the first-ever West Indies player to hit 150 sixes in T20I cricket.

The hard-hitting batter surpassed Nicholas Pooran, who had 149 sixes in his career, to achieve this feat in the T20 Internationals. However, Pooran is still the leading T20I run scorer for the Caribbean nation with 2,275 runs in 106 matches and 97 innings with the help of 13 fifties and the best score of 98.

Rovman Powell’s solid T20 record
Powell is also the Windies’ second-highest run scorer in T20I cricket with 2,261 runs in 117 T20I innings to his name to date. He averages almost 26 and strikes above 141. He also hit one century and 10 fifties in this format.
In the ongoing T20 World Cup, Powell has scored 149 runs in six innings at an average of 29.80 and a strike rate of above 147. In his long T20 career, he has smashed 394 sixes in 295 innings, and he now needs just six more sixes to reach the huge mark of 400 sixes in the format.
Powell is also close to another big milestone. He has scored 5,944 runs in T20 cricket so far and now needs only 56 more runs to touch 6,000 T20 runs.
India enter T20 World Cup 2026 Semifinal, West Indies crash out
Speaking about the match, the Caribbeans had a solid start. Roston Chase scored 40 from 25 balls with five fours and one six. Captain Shai Hope added 32 from 33 balls with three fours and a six. Both added 68 runs for the opening stand against India in Kolkata.
But things changed quickly. West Indies slipped to 119/4 in 14.1 overs. Shimron Hetmyer tried to lift the team with a quick 27 from just 12 balls. Then, Jason Holder blasted 37 not out from 22, while Powell hit 34 not out from 19 balls to show some fight.
Both added 76 runs in only 35 balls as West Indies posted 195 for 4 in 20 overs in the Super 8 game. Chasing the target, India sealed the match by five wickets thanks to Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97 and made it to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026, knocking West Indies out of the event.
