India’s dream of reaching the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final now hangs by a thread, and the situation looks far tougher than it did at the start of the cycle. And now Aakash Chopra has openly claimed that the Indian cricket team has pushed itself into a corner and now needs near-perfect results to stay alive in the WTC Final race.
WTC 2027 dream in danger as India faces a brutal road ahead
The Shubman Gill-led Indian Test team currently sits sixth on the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 points table with 48.15 percent points. Half of their journey is already over in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, as they have finished three of their six Test series.
India dropped all WTC points in the home series against South Africa, which hurt badly. Before being whitewashed by the Proteas side at home, India could not get enough points either on the England tour, finishing the five-match Test series 2-2 with less than half the possible tally.
They only collected full points against the West Indies, but that alone has not been enough to balance the damage to their WTC standing. So, they now don’t have any room for mistakes in their remaining test matches against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia.
Aakash Chopra calls India’s path to the WTC Final extremely difficult

Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel, “I will be very honest. It has become difficult because you lost both matches at home. It means you have lost 100 percent of the points. You came from England with less than 50 percent points. You got 100 percent of the points against the West Indies.”
Chopra has pointed out that India may earn hundred percent points on the Sri Lanka tour, but a five-match Test series clean sweep rarely happens in modern Test cricket, which they need against Australia at home. And then, India has not won a Test series in New Zealand since 2009.
Given this situation, the former cricketer felt India’s WTC Final chances are very slim. The cricket pandit further explained, “You will have to do well against Sri Lanka, then New Zealand, and then Australia at home. You don’t win five matches in a five-match series. It doesn’t happen generally. So winning 100 percent of the points there is very difficult.”

India’s WTC final is tough: Aakash Chopra
Chopra said that the 2-0 Test series loss to South Africa has changed the entire equation for India. He felt even one win against the Proteas side could have kept India in a safer position, but the chance slipped away. He said, “India’s WTC final is tough. It is not going to be an easy one. I can 100 percent share that with you, and it is not good news. India should have won at least one match and garnered 50 percent points against South Africa.”
India now faces a brutal reality, as one poor series could end their WTC Final dream completely. Chopra signed off by saying, “Taking a zero from there and then hoping that we will get 100 percent against Australia at home and that we will also win both in New Zealand, it won’t happen that easily. We are unable to beat New Zealand in New Zealand. That’s the truth. So, it’s going to be a tough one.”
