Shubman Gill leads from the front again
Gill made his debut as India Test captain in the series opener against England at Headingley in Leeds and became the 37th man to lead India in the longest format of the game.
He impressed with the bat in his debut innings as Test captain as he slammed a sensational 147 runs off 227 balls, with 19 fours and 1 six, becoming the 33rd player to score a hundred on Test captaincy debut and the fifth Indian to achieve the feat. In the second innings, Gill was unable to recreate the magic of the first innings and fell for 8 runs.
Meanwhile, the right-handed batsman continued his good form with the bat and played an excellent knock in the second game.
Being invited to bat first in the match, India got off to a poor start, with KL Rahul being dismissed for 2 in the 9th over. Karun Nair, who was promoted to No.3, scored 31 runs off 50 balls before being dismissed in the 24th over.
Shubman Gill came to bat after the dismissal of Nair and played a cautious knock. He showcased a lot of patience in the middle and scored his slowest ever fifty off 125 balls.
Shubman Gill scores his 7th Test ton
Gill built a solid 66 runs stand in 131 balls with Yashasvi Jaiswal and then 47 runs in 90 balls with Rishabh Pant to put England under pressure.
Although Gill didn’t receive any support from Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja assisted his skipper well by playing a brilliant knock. Together, Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja shifted momentum towards India, and during the partnership, Shubman Gill smashed an epic ton.
He completed his ton on 199th ball with a four off Joe Root in the 80th over. Gill celebrated aggressively after becoming the third Indian batter to hit a ton in Birmingham after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Also, he became the fourth Indian after Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli to hit back-to-back hundreds in the first two matches as Test skipper.

Hazare, Gavaskar, Kohli and now GILL.
4th Indian captain to score hundreds in his first 2 test matches as captain. Phenomenal 👊👊 #ShubmanGill #ENGvIND— Anant Tyagi (@anantyagi_) July 2, 2025
The only way he gets to where Kohli did by scoring runs like him. Gill knows it too and has done an incredible job of it with the bat. Slowest century by far, but worth it’s while.
