Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh is known for particularly two things – effective bowling and a lively personality. Along with taking wickets on the field, the pacer is widely loved by cricket fans for his charming personality. But when the matter gets serious, the Punjab-born knows how to deal with it. Like he did after winning the first of the 5-match T20I against New Zealand on Wednesday (January 21) in Nagpur.
After the match, Arshdeep Singh had to deal with a tricky question which could have put him on the wrong foot. But like his well-controlled bowling, he knows how to take on difficult questions like a professional. The question was about the selection process run by the Indian team management, which forced him to be on the bench in multiple crucial matches in the recent past.
Arshdeep Singh’s response to the team selection process
In response, Arshdeep combined his bowling with the selection process. He stated that due to the selection process, he gained some benefits as well, and he enjoyed that as well.
“Jaise main team se in and out hota hoon uska advantage bhi hai. Mera ball bhi in and out jaata hai (Being in and out of the team has its own set of advantages. Like I am in and out of the team, my ball is also coming in and going out. So I am enjoying that),” the seamer said.
Arshdeep Singh got his man early in the IND vs NZ 1st T20I match
New Zealand lost their out-of-form opener Devon Conway early in the match while chasing India’s first innings score of 238 runs. Arshdeep took only a couple of deliveries to dismiss the experienced Kiwi batter. An out-swinging delivery from the pacer Fox Conway early in the second innings. Sanju Samson took a flying one-handed catch to give the wicket-taking process a picture-perfect touch.
It was the only wicket Singh got in the match. But his economical bowling helped India to put pressure on the New Zealand batting line-up. In his 4-over spell, the left-handed bowler offered only 31 runs to the opposition team. The power hitting of Glenn Phillips added a layer of tension during the match; India was too good to win the contest by 48 runs.
Arshdeep Singh’s 2025 stats for Team India
With 111 wickets in 73 T20 Internationals, Arshdeep remains India’s most prolific wicket-taker in the T20 Internationals for India. Whenever he got opportunities in the playing eleven, he often delivered by taking crucial wickets and economical bowling in powerplays and death overs.
But still, due to experiments related to team combinations during head coach Gautam Gambhir’s era, he had to warm the bench on multiple occasions. In 2025, Arshdeep played in 13 out of 21 T20Is for India.
“My job is to stay prepared and perform whenever the team needs me to bowl in any format, with either the new or old ball. My aim is to enjoy the journey, remain in the present, and focus on what I can control. What is beyond my control (selection), I shouldn’t worry about,” Singh added.
