Australia veteran Marcus Stoinis expressed gratitude and pure respect to former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh. Stoinis mentioned that as an overseas player, he got a lot of help and suggestions from Singh when he came to play in the Indian Premier League.
More than only a teammate, the Aussie star hails Yuvraj Singh as a mentor, who helped him a lot to polish his game. Stoinis stated that when he came to India, he was very young by then, and Yuvraj Singh was the experienced one. Despite a lot of differences, the emerging cricketer from Australia got to learn from the Indian cricket legend.
Stoinis recalled the days when he played with Yuvraj Singh
“I played with Yuvraj Singh in the IPL. Although I was playing with him, I describe him more as a mentor. I was quite young, and he was obviously very experienced,” Stoinis said in a recent video released by the ICC.
Stoinis got the opportunity to share the same dressing room with Yuvraj Singh during the IPL 2018 season. In this season, Yuvraj and Marcus participated in the tournament for Punjab Kings (PBKS).
Marcus Stoinis called Yuvraj – Super talented, elegant, and powerful
The well-built Australian cricketer, who himself gained a reputation as a power hitter, praised the batting style of Yuvraj. The Aussie all-rounder described him as the embodiment of power, elegance, and immense talent.
“Super talented, elegant, and powerful. Not the typical power that maybe is on highlight around the world today. It was a more relaxed, rhythmical power. Very nice guy, very helpful. I mean, to a young overseas player coming to the IPL, he was very good to me. Nothing but absolute respect,” Stoinis added.
Abhishek Sharma, Priyansh Arya, and Prabhsimran Singh are the real-life examples in support of the comments made by Stoinis over Yuvraj’s mentorship ability and helpful nature. Under the observation of the former Indian cricketer, Sharma, Arya, and Singh gradually went under the spotlight, first in the Indian Premier League and then for Team India.
While Sharma has established himself as a regular opener for Team India in T20Is, the other two batters, Arya and Singh, played for the reserve team of India in the past.
Abhishek Sharma shared a conversation with Yuvraj
In 2025, in an interview, recalling an instance, Abhishek Sharma revealed how Yuvraj inspired him to play for the national team.
“Paji directly told me, ‘I am not preparing you for the state team, I am not preparing you for the IPL, and I am not preparing you just to handle things. I am preparing you to play for India. You have to win matches for India. Write this down and keep it.” And he said, “Next, next two, three years max, I”,” the opener said.
