Rishabh Pant falls after a half-century

The India Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant played a brave knock in the fourth Test match against England. He sustained a foot injury on Day 1 before retiring out and finding it was a fracture.

The BCCI announced that Pant’s foot fracture will rule him out of the next Test match of Anderson-Tendulkar 2025 and he will only bat if required in the Manchester Test, with Dhruv Jurel doing the wicket-keeping duties.

Pant arrived at Old Trafford in Manchester for Day 2 of the game and limped out to bat despite injury after all-rounder Shardul Thakur’s dismissal. He was applauded by the crowd for his move as the spectators gave him a standing ovation.

Pant was scratchy in the middle initially as he played and missed a few deliveries, but after getting set, he batted brilliantly and took the English bowlers to cleaners

Rishabh Pant was in clear discomfort in the middle, but he kept scoring runs before eventually falling in the 113th over, which was bowled by Jofra Archer.

On the third ball of the 113th over, Jofra Archer bowled an absolute jaffa from round the wicket that landed on a good length before going past the bat and demolishing the stumps. The ball sent the off-stump for a cartwheel before it replanted itself.

Pant got out after scoring 54 runs off 75 balls, with three fours and two sixes. He walked back to a standing ovation from the crowd at Old Trafford.

Pant has given so much in this series – Michael Atherton

Speaking on Sky Sports, Michael Atherton lauded Rishabh Pant and said that he has been absolutely remarkable. He said:

Meanwhile, Dinesh Karthik highlighted the admiration that the Manchester crowd has for Pant. He stated:

“You’ve got to admire Pant here. An amazing effort. It’s all about attitude and you can see the admiration everyone in this ground has for him.”

Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, former England skipper Michael Vaughan also showered rich praise on Pant, saying that he has been tremendous throughout the series. He stated:

“Rishabh Pant provided a special moment in the whole series. He’s been tremendous throughout but to see him hobble out there to continue to bat is remarkable. I can only imagine what is going on in that boot.”
