Shubman Gill hits a double century on Day 2
Since taking over the leadership of the Indian Test team, Gill has looked like a completely different batter and has played with a lot more maturity.
The right-handed batsman hit a century in his debut innings as Test captain at Headingley in Leeds and carried forward his good form in the second match.
He looked calm and composed in the middle on Day 1 and batted patiently. Gill took his time to get his eyes set and completed his fifty off 125 balls, his slowest ever. He then completed his century off 199 balls and finished the day with an unbeaten 114 runs.
The right-handed batsman started off Day 2 with a lot of confidence and looked determined to score a daddy hundred. He reached the 150-run mark in 263 balls and then set his eyes on a double ton.
After grinding hard in the middle, Gill finally completed his double century on the first ball of the 122nd over, which was bowled by Josh Tongue.
He pulled a delivery from Josh Tongue towards fine leg for a single to reach the milestone and celebrated aggressively, before doing his trademark gesture.
Shubman Gill becomes the first Indian captain to score a double hundred in England
Gill’s performance at Edgbaston in Birmingham has helped him become the first Indian captain to score a double hundred in England and overall just the third batter after Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid.
He also has the highest score for an Indian captain in England Tests and is only the second Indian captain to score a double ton away from home after Virat Kohli, who had achieved the feat in 2016.
Gill is the sixth Indian batter to register a Test double ton as captain after Pataudi Jr., Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.

The vultures were circling, the critics had their pens ready and then this guy walked in with fire in his eyes and let his bat do the talking. The cricketing gods chose their vessel, and he delivered.

How to take over the mantle as the lead batter?
How to lead the team from the front?
How to revel with responsibility?
Shubman Gill does all of it with a classy double!— Amol Karhadkar (@karhacter) July 3, 2025
Too good Shubhman Gill… 1st Indian Captain to score a double hundred… Its not about the record it is about scoring and saving a team which is probably the weakest Test side ever in the history of Indian Cricket travelling to England… This is called character @ShubmanGill…
