Former South African legend AB de Villiers has warned that Indian superstar Abhishek Sharma will be under immense pressure going into the crucial game against the West Indies in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. He stressed further that he will be burdened by the expectations of his team and millions of Indian fans.
India entered the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 as one of the most explosive batting units in the world. At one point, the campaigns claimed that India could score a 300-run total in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. However, India have struggled from time to time with the bat in this contest.
Dynamic star Abhishek Sharma did not look in the best of touch after he managed to score just 70 runs in five innings. The batter finally regained some confidence with a magnificent innings against Zimbabwe, where he got his maiden ICC half-century.
“It’s a pressure game, and for a guy out of form to play a pressure game is tough,” opined AB de Villiers
Former South African captain AB de Villiers believes that Abhishek Sharma will be under immense pressure in the vital clash between India and the West Indies. The dynamic left-handed opener will be subjected to acute pressure since it’s a do-or-die contest for them.
“He’s out of form but very dangerous. They’ll need him against the West Indies. It’s a pressure game, and for a guy out of form to play a pressure game is tough,” said AB de Villiers about Abhishek Sharma’s poor form in the tournament.
“Look at Jos Buttler, for instance, against New Zealand. You can see he’s feeling a bit of pressure. He’s one of the best T20 players ever, and if he can feel the pressure, Abhishek will certainly feel the pressure against the West Indies with the entire country on his back,” he added.
“That Can Sometimes Get Very Heavy On a Player” – AB de Villiers
Despite his recent struggles, Abhishek Sharma remains one of the best batters in the Indian lineup. And thanks to his terrific 2025 season, he is still the No. 1-ranked ICC T20I batter despite having started the ICC T20 World Cup with three ducks.
Moreover, AB de Villiers also pointed out that the Indian team, as well as the fans of the Men in Blue, would burden Abhishek with their hopes of seeing him perform.
“They’ll want him to perform, knowing the standards he has set over the last few months. That can sometimes get very heavy on a player,” he added.
“Focus On What You Are Good At…” – AB de Villiers Tipped the Indian Explosive Batter
AB de Villiers then went on to pass on invaluable advice to the Indian star. He asked him to slow down things and take his time at the crease. Despite his barren run in the tournament, he remains one of the imminent threats to the opposition.
“My advice to him would be to just focus on what you are good at. That is to see the cricket ball, take a few deep breaths, and make sure you slow things down. When you feel like the bowlers are rushing you, send them back. Pretend like you are taking your guard again,” said De Villiers (via the aforementioned source).
He then continued saying that he should be aware of the dimensions of the ground and then look to keep the ball on the floor, working mainly on the basics. He further adviced him not to go big initially and rather start with a 5-ball 5.
