Because of some media reports and fresh comments by England limited-overs captain Harry Brook cast uncertainty over Pakistan players’ participation in the upcoming The Hundred tournament. According to claims, because of their nationality, Pakistani players can be barred from taking part in the competition.
Though there have been no official statements regarding these rumours. In a recent video, former India opener Aakash Chopra slams Harry Brook and former England captain Michael Vaughan for making some statements regarding the rumours.
Media reports suggested that four Indian-owned sides are not interested in Pakistani cricketers
According to a BBC report, Sources have told BBC Sport that Pakistan players are not being considered by the four Indian-owned sides for the auction, which will take place on 11 and 12 March.
“That part of The Hundred is above me and whatever they decided to do is up to them. Pakistan has been a great cricket nation for many years and has some awesome players, some of the best players in the world. It would be a shame not to see some of them in The Hundred”, Brook said during a press conference.
The skipper of England’s ODI and T20I teams will feature for Indian-owned Sunrisers Leeds, previously known as Northern Superchargers. They signed the explosive middle-order batter for a fee of £465,000.
Michael Vaughan urged the ECB to ensure Pakistani cricketers’ participation in The Hundred tournament
Like Harry Brook, former England captain Michael Vaughan also raised concerns about the possibilities to restrict Pakistani cricketers from the franchise tournament. On Friday, he stated that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) needs to act first, because restricting a player based on nationality can be the wrong stance.
Though Aakash Chopra instantly dismissed all the speculations related to Pakistan and the Hundred League. He believes that the comments made by Brook and Vaughan are the perfect examples of hypocrisy.
Last season, when Pakistan players went on the auction, none of the franchises bid for them, and Pakistan players remained unsold in The Hundred auction. Why did Harry Brook remain silent at that moment? Chopra raised the question.
Aakash Chopra exposed hypocrisy
“There is a limit to hypocrisy. The auction is on the 12th; they are putting pressure to pick. If you do not pick, then you are discriminating. Last year no Pakistani players were picked in the league, and then no one was crying. Harry Brook also didn’t say a single word”, Aakash Chopra responded.
“Pakistani player Usman Tariq also plays for Sharukh Khan’s franchise TKR in the CPL, so how did you assume that Indian owners will not pick Pakistani players?”, he raised the question as well.
