Overton swung hard but missed. The ball smashed into the inside part of his thigh, very close to his knee. Overton was clearly in immense pain. He struggled for a moment and looked uncomfortable. The hit was powerful and clearly hurt him badly.
But despite the pain, he did not give up. He quickly ran and completed a leg bye to finish the innings. England ended their 20 overs at 146 for 9 against Sri Lanka in their Super 8 clash.

Phil Salt fights alone as Sri Lanka spin web strangles England
Sri Lanka bowled really well after inviting England to bat first in Pallekele. England had a poor start and ended up with a below-par score. Sri Lanka bowled 12 overs of spin and conceded only 85 runs while taking 5 wickets in those overs. Except for Phil Salt (62 runs off 40 balls), none of the England batters could face even 15 balls against Sri Lanka.
Only Will Jacks could score 21 runs while half of the team was dismissed for a single-digit score. Sri Lanka was also excellent in the field. They have impressively taken 6 catches and pulled off a brilliant run-out to dismiss Banton in the 8th over in Pallekele.

Dilshan Madushanka (2/25) was excellent in the powerplay overs and later returned to bowl the second-to-last over, where he picked up two important wickets. Maheesh Theekshana (2/21) and Dunith Wellalage (3/26) were the standout bowlers for the Islanders. They used different variations cleverly and did not allow England’s batters to hit big shots in the middle overs.
Dunith Wellalage reveals strategy before batting disaster
During the innings break, Dunith Wellalage said the pitch was a bit slow, so he focused on bowling straight and attacking the stumps. He explained that he had already studied England’s batting during their recent Sri Lanka tour, which helped him plan better in this Super 8 clash.
Wellalage stated, “First of all, the wicket was a bit slow. So, I backed myself to bowl wicket-to-wicket. I read the wicket; we played this England side before the WC, and I knew about their batting. It’s a bit slow (on the surface), so I wanted to vary my pace. Definitely, hopefully we can chase this target.”
However, chasing the modest target, the Island had a disastrous start as they lost five wickets for just 35 runs inside the powerplay against England in the ongoing Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 in Pallekele. Will Jacks and Jofra Archer broke the backbone of the Sri Lankan lineup.
