Gautam Gambhir charged with favouritism as Shubman Gill-Washington Sundar controversy turns ugly

The Team India batting coach Ryan ten Doeschate has provided some major updates on Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, and Abhishek Sharma. All of these three cricketers left under uncertainty because of separated injury concerns.

While Sharma played the opening fixture of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026, the other two cricketers, Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar, were not in the playing XI in the previous match because of injuries. The coach informed the media about the fitness status of the three players ahead of their next group stage match with Namibia on February 12.

Fitness updates on Washington Sundar, Abhishek Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah

Ahead of India’s match with Namibia, Ryan ten Doeschate said that the spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar has joined the team in Delhi and is all set to bowl. But he was not able to provide any positive updates on Bumrah and Sharma. The former Netherlands international stated that Bumrah has not bowled for the last ten days, and Abhishek Sharma is still not fully fit. The opener has been dealing with an upset stomach.

After India’s opening match against the United States, captain Suryakumar Yadav also informed about the injury updates. He stated that all-rounder Washington Sundar is set to join the squad in Delhi. In the follow-up, the batting coach informed Sundar that, as per the previous plans, he is currently with the team. But the uncertainty remains over Bumrah and Sharma.

Sundar’s injury was serious

About Bumrah, Yadav claimed that the star pacer was down with a high fever while Abhishek was “under the weather.” Team India has only a day in hand before their next match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. In this time period, can these two cricketers be able to get back on the track to play the next match? The question is yet to be answered.

Sundar injured himself during India’s home ODI series against New Zealand. The spin-bowling all-rounder received a side strain and rib muscle tear during the series. Since then, the Tamil Nadu-born has been out from any forms of the game.

The injury was serious, but the BCCI decided not to replace him from the T20 World Cup squad. Sundar is back into the nets after completing his rehabilitation season, and as per current reports, he is looking fit enough to play a competitive match again.

Sundar missed multiple matches

The addition of Washington Sundar undoubtedly will increase the team’s batting and bowling strength; he can contribute equally well both with bat and ball. Washington Sundar’s absence had been a concern for the team management. Because of the injuries, he missed a bilateral T20I series with New Zealand as well before the match. As he is fit now to perform, then it is possible enough to see him straightaway in action against Namibia.

The 26-year-old underwent an intense rehabilitation program at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. During the rehabilitation season, the main focus was to increase his strengths and ensure full recovery. His comeback is a timely instance, as India is scheduled to play Pakistan on February 15, after playing against Namibia on February 12.
