BBL controversy erupts in final! Joel Davies called back from dugout as Cooper Connolly’s catch declared invalid

Bizarre scenes in BBL final: Sydney Sixers' batter Joel Davies called back after being given out

The BBL season 15 final has arrived after a month-long, exciting cricket action in Australia. The Sydney Sixers are a strong franchise with the return of some of their seasoned stars, while the Perth Scorchers, the other finalists, have some shining young talent. Amid all this, a bizarre incident rocked the BBL final.

The Perth Scorchers and the Sydney Sixers have not made the best start to the Big Bash season, but later climbed the ladder, and the Scorchers finished at the top of the points table, followed by the Sydney Sixers.

The Sixers’ campaign revived with the addition of their international stars; however, the Scorchers had a dominant hand over the Sixers in the knockout games. The Sixers lost the Qualifier but then defeated the Hobart Hurricanes in the Challenger to qualify for the final.

BBL 15 finale marks bizarre incident with Sydney Sixers batter

The Big Bash League marked the end of the 15th edition of the BBL, with the final match being played today at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The Optus Stadium was picked as the final’s venue after the Perth Scorchers won the Qualifier.

A bizarre incident took place in the Sydney Sixers’ batting innings when lower-order batsman Joel Davies was at the crease. It was the second ball of the 18th over of the innings, and Davies flicked a ball nicely towards the deep mid-wicket boundary.

Conolly ran full stretch to his wrong end and took a stunning catch while diving to his right. He was well short of the rope, and batter was ruled out by the field umpire. However, as Davies walked off the ground, he was recalled as it was noted that he grounded the ball with his fingers, not under the ball, and hence, the ball touched the turf.

It was deemed not out, and the batter was called in to bat again. He was, however, dismissed on the very first ball of the next over.

Steve Smith misses out on a half-century in the BBL final

Steve Smith, the legendary Australian batter, made a comeback for the Sydney Sixers after the end of the Ashes in the 2025-26 season. Smith led them to victory in three of the matches, while he finished the series with a stunning century.

Steve Smith made his comeback with the match against the Hurricanes, which was when he walked out to open the innings for the first time with Babar Azam. The match was ruled out due to excessive rainfall, and Smith was not out on 19*.

In the following match, he scored his fourth BBL hundred, which made him the player with the most BBL centuries. He completed his hundred in just 41 balls in the game against the Sydney Thunder. He then kept playing some fine hands for the Sixers with two more half-centuries in three innings.

Having accumulated 275 runs in 5 innings for the Sixers, he averaged 68.75 with a century and two half-centuries. In the BBL final, however, Smith was caught plumb in front of the three stumps after having made a decent 24 runs off 13 balls.

Perth Scorchers are chasing their 6th BBL title on the low-scoring track of Optus Stadium

The Perth Scorchers, the five-time BBL winning champion side, are the most successful team in the history of the Big Bash League. They are now chasing their sixth title in this edition of the BBL. The Sydney Sixers, chasing their fourth, are the second most successful team.

The way the Scorchers have been off to a flying start with their skipper, Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen firing at the top, chasing a timid score of 133, it looks like the Scorchers are very close to their 6th title in the competition. The Optus, though, has been a ground for crunch fights.
