India’s U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup-winning spinner, Vaishnavi Sharma, who went unsold in the WPL mega-auction, has bagged her first-ever WPL contract midway through the WPL 2026 season for the Mumbai indians.
The Women’s Premier League is into its fourth edition, and the teams had their playing squads revamped with several newer additions and key players from other sides moving to other franchises. Currently, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru women, who won the WPL in 2024, are at the top of the points table.
The Mumbai Indians follow the RCB Women in the points table with their high net run rate; however, as per wins and points, the Mumbai Indians, UP Warriorz and the Gujarat Titans are all level with 2 wins in 5 games.
Vaishnavi Sharma bags debut contract in the WPL
The Mumbai Indians have faced a massive blow as their player, G. Kamalini, has been ruled out of the remainder of the WPL season with an injury. The details of the injury has not been made public by the MI management.
Vaishnavi Sharma, the 20-year-old youngster, has played for India in the U19 World Cup and was a leading wicket-taker in that edition, and then went on to make her debut for India. Playing 5 matches for India, she picked 5 wickets in senior-level Women’s cricket as well.
Finally, the young spinner has bagged a debut contract with the Mumbai Indians for INR 30 lakh. Kamalini has so far managed to score 75 off 77 balls for the MI franchise with a best score of 32 against RCB. As a wicket-keeper, she effected 7 dismissals this season.
Vaishnavi Sharma and G Kamalini are all set for ODI debut in Australia
Both these Indian teenage cricketers, Vaishnavi Sharma and G. Kamalini, made their India debut against Sri Lanka last month before the start of the WPL. However, the Australia series will be much more crucial from India’s point of view.
Both these cricketers, who played against Sri Lanka in the T20I series ahead of the WPL, have earned their maiden call-ups for the ODI squad as well. Both young cricketers, Kamalini and Vaishnavi Sharma, will be part of the Indian contingent flying to Australia.
Several other big names like Shreyanka Patil and Bharti Fulmali have made their comeback for India in T20Is after some promising performances in the ongoing edition of the WPL.
Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt dominate with the bat, and Amelia Kerr shines once again with the ball
For the Mumbai Indians this season, skipper Harmanpreet has been the showman with the bat, as she has managed to lead the scoring stats with 199 runs in 5 matches, while Nat Sciver-Brunt once again follows the skipper with the bat.
New Zealand all-rounder Amy Kerr has been the finest bowler produced in the WPL’s history. A genuine wicket-taker, she was the winner of the purple cap in the last season and is leading the overall wicket-takers tally with 10 wickets in 5 games.
