Team India young opening batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi created history during the ongoing group-stage match against Bangladesh in Bulawayo on Saturday, January 17. The left-handed batter became the first player ever to score a half-century in an Under-19 Cricket World Cup match before the age of 15.
Suryavanshi had a quiet outing in the opening match against the United States of America on Thursday, January 15. Chasing 108 in a rain-affected game at Queens Sports Club, he opened the innings alongside Ayush Mhatre but managed only 2 runs from 4 balls. India went on to win the match by six wickets.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Becomes Youngest to Score a Half-Century in U19 World Cup
India got off to a poor start after being asked to bat first. Captain Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for 6, and Vedant Trivedi departed without scoring, leaving India at 12/2. However, Vaibhav Suryavanshi showed maturity and took control against the Bangladesh bowling attack.
The left-handed batter reached his half-century in just 30 balls. He brought up the milestone with a single off the sixth ball of the 13th over. At just 14 years and 296 days old, he became the youngest cricketer to score a half-century in Under-19 World Cup history.
Vaibhav scored 72 runs from 67 balls, including six fours and three sixes, before being dismissed. His innings ended on the second ball of the 27th over when Iqbal Hossain Emon got him out, with Al Fahad taking the catch. He also added 62 runs from 99 balls for the fourth wicket with Abhigyan Kundu.
